Information about your appointment

Why human genetic counseling?
  • There is a known hereditary disease, malformation or disability in your family. You would like to know the probability of recurrence for yourself or your children. (Examples: Cystic fibrosis, metabolic disorder, familial cancer, etc.).
  • You have a child with a disease of possible genetic origin. You would like to find out more about the diagnosis (cause), prognosis (expected development) and therapy (treatment options). (Examples: delayed development, congenital heart defect, epilepsy, etc.)
  • You are pregnant. The gynecologist has made an abnormal finding.
Basics of human genetic counseling

Human genetic counseling is:

  • voluntary - but recommended before any genetic testing;
  • confidential - no information is passed on without your consent;
  • non-directive - we provide you with information; you decide whether you want to take a genetic test.

An average consultation lasts at least 60 minutes. We have time for you! You can bring relatives or friends with you. A typical consultation goes like this:

  • Your concerns and questions: you help determine the course of the consultation.
  • Family tree: this is drawn by us, among other things to obtain information on the inheritance of the suspected illness.
  • Physical examination: this sometimes provides crucial findings that can make a diagnosis possible.
  • Sometimes we recommend an additional examination by a specialist (e.g. a neurologist or pediatrician)
  • For most questions, we offer you a genetic test. In these cases, we will invite you to a further consultation to discuss the results.
  • After the consultation, we will send you a summary report. So you don't need to memorize all the information during the consultation!
Expectations and reality - information on genetic tests
  • As a rule, a blood sample is sufficient, for which you do not need to be sober.
  • There is no "all-round" genetic test that can rule out any genetic problems within a family.
  • A genetic test can only answer one specific question. Formulating this question is a task of genetic counseling.
  • Not all genetic tests are desirable or economically justifiable. We will provide you with advice in this regard.
What we ask you to do
  • Please keep the agreed consultation appointment or inform us in good time if you are unable to attend.
  • If you do not understand or speak sufficient German, please let us know in advance. Ideally, you should bring an interpreter with you. If you would like us to organize an interpreter, please let us know at least 1 week in advance.
  • Before the consultation, please send us copies of the medical findings that are the reason for the human genetic consultation. Your referring (family) doctor will help you with this.
  • Please make sure you bring a referral slip from your doctor with you, as this is essential for invoicing.
  • Please do not hesitate to call us or send us an e-mail if you have any questions about the consultation afterwards. Your criticism is also welcome at any time.
  • Please inform us of any change of address, preferably in writing.
