Further education
Human genetics is an interdisciplinary subject that combines medicine and biology. Specialist skills from both disciplines are required to identify genetic diseases and to classify genetic data in the corresponding clinical picture. The GfH offers natural scientists with a university degree the opportunity to qualify for the field of genetic diagnostics as part of a 5-year in-service training course. The training is designed to enable them to carry out cytogenetic, molecular cytogenetic, molecular genetic and biochemical laboratory tests for the diagnosis of genetic diseases or genetic predispositions to diseases and to evaluate the results based on current scientific data. Further training takes place under the guidance of authorized persons at appropriately equipped training facilities and includes the acquisition of practical skills, theoretical knowledge and participation in specialist scientific events. The GfH conducts the examination to become a specialist human geneticist and issues a corresponding certificate upon successful completion of further training in accordance with the further training regulations. The professional title awarded is proof of special professional competence in the field of human genetic diagnostics, thus enabling the holder to work independently and autonomously in the field of human genetics and contributing to quality assurance in medical care.

Human genetics has gained great importance in all areas of medicine. It is a wide-ranging, interdisciplinary science that combines medical diagnostics with molecular biological research and methodology. The field of human genetics encompasses the clarification, detection and treatment of genetic diseases, including genetic counseling for patients and their families as well as doctors working in healthcare. The aim of further training is the regulated acquisition of in-depth knowledge, experience and skills for defined medical activities after completion of training. It takes place over several years of professional activity under the guidance of doctors authorized to provide further training. Further training and recognition as a medical specialist is governed by the chamber or medical profession laws of the federal states and the further training regulations of the state medical associations of which he/she is a member.
Training period
- Genetic counseling (2 years)
- Molecular genetics (1 year)
- Cytogenetics (1 year)
- One clinical subject (1 year)
Apart from the clinical year (ward service according to the requirements of the Medical Association), the Institute of Human Genetics in Cologne, together with the practice of Drs. Meschede/Schubert and the MVZ of the University Hospital of Cologne, has a full 48-month authorization for further training as a specialist in human genetics.
